You may hear some ideas for how to bring up these topics. And if they don't want to go to the counselor with you, you can always go alone. A counselor or other mental health expert may be able to help you and your loved one explore topics that you don’t feel able to on your own. But if you have trouble talking about painful issues, ask for professional advice. Some people won’t start a conversation themselves, but may respond if you start first.
